It is no secret that I have a strong affection for working dogs, in fact, any animal that works for the benefit of man. But I have never had as much time working with that other great friend of man; the horse.
So, when I had the opportunity to work with and photograph a ghillie out stalking, in The Scottish Highlands, with his working Highland Ponies I jumped at the chance. My time with the ghillie, Eric Starke, plus his ponies Mia and Cally was highly memorable as I watched them working in the step sided Angus Glens bringing the Red Deer Stags off the hill, often over terrain that would be inaccessible to even the highest tech modern off-road multi-terrain vehicles.
The photography was part of a commission for a magazine article about the use of Highland Ponies in the Scottish Highlands then with the editor’s agreement I have published a book about my time following Eric and his ponies.
